One circulating rule of revealing is the site-wide disclosure contract. Same a privateness insurance, it's linked in its own area, unremarkably in the note or piloting.

I am very reluctantly willing to concede that mass advertising involving outright lies is a bad thing, and must be regulated, but the regulations must be as narrow as possible, involve as little prior restraint as possible, and only invoke penalties when actual harm has been done (that is, when an actual lie has been told.)

And no, I am far more concerned about government control than corporate control. Increasingly, however, government and corporatism are so deeply intertwingled that it's hard to tell the difference. Modern corporations are, essentially, creatures of the government. And do not be fooled into thinking, as so many have, that the greedy and power mad won't move to the government if that's where the money and power is. The difference is, governments have guns and prisons, and they're not afraid to use them.

All that aside: my point here is my fundamental opposition to voluntarily placing regulatory control knobs, or even indicators, directly into the code. The code should only support letting people speak their minds, good or bad, well or poorly.

Understand: you put that tag in your code "voluntarily", and it will soon enough be a requirement. And it will not be the last.

Thanks for your comment, DJ.

If we're talking about who has control of the media, then we should be talking about corporations, not the government. The FTC's guidelines are designed to protect the consumer. Are you similarly upset about the control they exert over newspaper ads or TV commercials?

How about this:

I post whatever I damn well please on my blog, and if the FTC comes for me, that's why we have a Second Amendment as well as a First.

Making HTML messier than it is to please some useless nanny-state bureaucratic thug is a terrible idea, and a worse precedent.

[...] Rex Riepe on Strikepad likes licking boots, I guess: Imagine a worst case blogging scenario: The FTC have pegged you as a violator of their disclosure guidelines. You now face $11,000 in fines per sponsored post. Or, worse yet– you don’t live in the states, but your country has recently implemented a policy that makes the FTC fines seem like parking tickets.
